Description
Rodef Shalom Congregation’s third building, at the corner of Fifth and Morewood Avenues in Shadyside, has continued to serve the congregation’s needs since it was completed in 1907. The architectural firm Palmer & Hornbostel won the competition for the building’s design, and Henry Hornbostel, who also designed the original Carnegie Institute of Technology buildings and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, was the principal architect. The design incorporated four large figural stained glass windows that had been designed by William and Annie Lee Willet for the second Eighth Street synagogue building. The central dome, constructed of Guastavino tile with no structural steel support, has a clear span of 92 feet; its skylight of stained glass was designed by Hermann Schladermundt. Dr. J. Leonard Levy, Rabbi, and Abraham Lippman, President of the Board of Trustees, spoke at the opening service in September, 1907. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
