Description
As the Rodef Shalom Congregation grew in the late 19th century, its first building on Eighth Street became too small and was torn down. This second synagogue was built at the same downtown location and dedicated in September, 1901.The architect was Charles Bickel (1852-1921), whose design for this imposing brick building included a large rose window. At the time of construction, Dr. Lippman Mayer was Rodef Shalom’s Rabbi, and Abraham Lippman was President of the Board of Trustees. Just three years later, the congregation had grown exponentially under the leadership of its new Rabbi, Dr. J. Leonard Levy, and a decision was made to build a new temple near Oakland, the emerging civic center of Pittsburgh. This building was sold to the Second Presbyterian Church, which used it until it was torn down in 1959.
