Description
This clip features the future Senator H. John Heinz III, a year into his first congressional term, aboard the steamboat the Delta Queen. Attending the ceremony, from left to right, are Joseph M. Gaydos, Heinz, Colonel Norman Delbridge of the Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard Commander R.E. Anderson, John Grove of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Congressman William S. Morehead, County Commissioner Thomas Foerster, Ship’s Master Don Sanders, and Arthur V. Harris of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Pittsburgh. The group boarded the Delta Queen for a trip down the Ohio River to inspect recovery efforts following a series of floods. Partially constructed in 1926 at Dumbarton, Scotland, the Delta Queen was first operated by the California Transportation Company to transport passengers between San Francisco and Sacramento. In 1946, Greene Line Steamers bought the Delta Queen and moved it to Pittsburgh to be refurbished. The ship, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989, provided service between Pittsburgh, New Orleans, St. Paul, and ports in between. The current owners of the Delta Queen have announced that the ship will cease operation at the end of the 2008 season.
