History

The Allegheny County Labor Council is the umbrella organization for hundreds of local unions in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Prompted by the national merger of the AFL and CIO in 1955, the Allegheny County Labor Council was formed in 1961 through the merger of the following area labor councils: Pittsburgh Central Labor Union, the McKeesport Central Labor Council, the Steel City Industrial Union Council, and the Tarentum District Industrial Union Council.

Scope and Content Notes

Though the Allegheny County Labor Council (ACLC) records include material dating from 1939-1998, the bulk of the materials document the ACLC's activities from about 1961-1984. This collection contains administrative files, materials relating to Paul Stackhouse, clippings, and miscellany. The administrative files include meeting minutes, organizational constitution and by-laws, materials relating to ACLC committee membership, and circular letters from the AFL-CIO. Series II, materials relating to Paul Stackhouse, include biographical materials, a photograph of Stackhouse, various ephemera, and newspaper clippings relating to Stackhouse's activities and accomplishments. The clippings constituting Series III are arranged alphabetically by subject and document major events and personalities in the early years of the ACLC, such aselections of ACLC officers (I.W. Abel, David McDonald, William Hart, John Feigel, James Puglin, Gilbert Teitel) and the merger of the four AFL and CIO labor bodies to create the ACLC. The final series contains miscellaneous materials relating to the ACLC including AFL-CIO publications, photographs, financial records, notes, correspondence, and the original copies of the clippings of Series III.
