Description
The future site of the Spring Garden Avenue playground (foreground). The Spring Garden neighborhood of Pittsburgh is located approximately 2 miles north of downtown Pittsburgh. Now known as the North Side, this area was a city in its own right until its 1907 annexation to Pittsburgh. Known as Allegheny, it included previously annexed communities such as Troy Hill, the East Street Valley, Spring Garden, and Manchester. In the past, Spring Garden was the location of many slaughterhouses, rendering factories, and tanneries.
