Description
The Highland Park Zoological Gardens, now the Pittsburgh Public Zoo and Aquarium, opened on June 14,1898, due in large part to a generous donation of $125,000 by philanthropist Christopher Lyman Magee for the construction of zoological gardens in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood. The Zoo has undergone a number of transformations over the last 106 years. In 1937 an outdoor bear exhibit was added to the Zoo, and in 1949 Pittsburgh’s first Children’s Zoo opened following the receipt of a grant from the Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation. The aquarium portion of the Zoo, then known as the AquaZoo, opened in 1967. It was the second largest aquarium in the United States when it first opened. Major renovations began in the 1980s, including the widespread creation of naturalistic habitats for the animals. In 1994 the Zoo made another major transition from a City operated organization to a private non-profit operated organization. The Zoological Society of Pittsburgh currently owns and operated the Pittsburgh Public Zoo.
