Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “The rubble of the old buildings gives way for the new modern gateway center skyscrapers. Equitable Life Assurance Society is spending about $40 million on the project. Equitable acquired the land through the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh. The 24-story building in the foreground is now occupied jointly by Westinghouse Electric Corporation and the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation.” In all, forty buildings were demolished and a dozen streets abandoned to make way for the Gateway Center Project in the early 1950s. This marked the beginning of Pittsburgh’s Renaissance. The Gateway Center buildings were completed around 1952.
