  • Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “The rubble of the old buildings gives way for the new modern gateway center skyscrapers. Equitable Life Assurance Society is spending about $40 million on the project. Equitable acquired the land through the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh. The 24-story building in the foreground is now occupied jointly by Westinghouse Electric Corporation and the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation.” In all, forty buildings were demolished and a dozen streets abandoned to make way for the Gateway Center Project in the early 1950s. This marked the beginning of Pittsburgh’s Renaissance. The Gateway Center buildings were completed around 1952.
