Description
The Pioneer School, located at 775 Dunster Street in the Brookline neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was built in 1958 and was designed by B. Kenneth Johnstone. The one-story school was equipped with the latest materials for educating and training boys and girls with multiple and physical disabilities. The school, located on an attractive twelve-acre site, includes wide corridors and doorways to permit the use of wheelchairs. The school also has a therapy department, making it unique in the Pittsburgh Public School System. This department allows the pupil to attend regular classes without absence, while receiving therapy within the same premises. The combined education-therapy program enables students to attend school and enjoy some of the social and more worldly aspects of normal living rather than confining all contacts within the home. The school staff consists of teachers, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, speech, vision and hearing specialists.
