[T1S1] Respondent describes backgrounds of grandparents and parents; Orthodox, religion most important, not only ceremonial. Respondent lived in Mt. Washington, member of Beth Hamedrash Hagadol; no synagogue in Mt. Washington. Father started dry goods business. Recalls large Jewish population in Hill District; Rabbi Kaplan and Rabbi Ashinsky. Only 5 or 6 Jewish families in Mt. Washington; never experienced anti-Semitism. Attended Cargo Elementary School, Prospect Jr. High School. Worked Kaufmann's department store after school. Graduated University of Pittsburgh., 1940.
