History

Hartley G. Fleming was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on March 2, 1898. His father, J.W. Fleming, moved from California to Pittsburgh, where for 38 years he worked as a cashier, and later became vice president of Farmers Deposit National Bank. His mother was Jean Caven Fleming. Hartley Fleming began his military service in 1917, after briefly studying at Princeton University. During World War I, he served in both the United States Army and Navy, shuttling troops between Hoboken, NJ, and Brest, France. After the war, he managed investment securities in Pittsburgh and New York, before spending two years with the American Can Co. in Honolulu. Fleming then moved to Pasadena, Ca., where he worked in the real estate business. During World War II, he began a second tour of duty in the Navy, rising from the rank of lieutenant to lieutenant commander by 1954. During this time, he also traveled extensively in Asia and northern Africa. After retiring in 1959, he moved to La Jolla, Ca., where he lived until his death on March 1, 1987.

Scope and Content Notes

The Hartley G. Fleming Papers and Photographs contain personal papers, family photographs, and official records from the life of Hartley Given Fleming. The collection holds official documents from Fleming's years of military service, including discharge papers, medical assessments, officer applications, and certificates. Also included are items from Fleming's civilian career in real estate and investment. In addition to newspaper clippings about Fleming's life, the papers include personal items such as family photographs, private correspondence, childhood drawings, and a leather-bound bible. .
