The maps were prepared for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in conjunction with a comprehensive planning initiative in the 1970s for improved county water systems. The majority of the maps were produced by Green International, Inc., an engineering consulting firm which was based out of Sewickley, Pa. Several maps were created by the Southwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning Commission.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources Maps primarily depict municipal wastewater conveyance routes, water treatment facilities, and proposed treatment alternatives. They cover nine Southwest Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, and Westmoreland. Other maps in the collection provide diagrams of geological problem areas, coal mining pockets, ground water degradation, and industrial wastewater discharge sites.
