In 1905, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation began erecting a fully integrated steel mill spanning seven miles along the Ohio River north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Located in Aliquippa, the plant was an integral part of the World War II economy and the American labor movement. The 1937 Supreme Court case of National Labor Relations Board v. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation resulted in the declaration that the Wagner Act of 1935 was constitutional, thus reinforcing that companies could not fire employees for unionizing. In 1984, LTV closed most of the Aliquippa Works. In 2000, US Steel purchased the tin mill, the only portion of the plant that was still in operation, and closed it as well.
