Description
In this photograph, President Herbert L. Spencer (left) walks in the 1935 Matriculation Day procession. Dr. Spencer was President of the Pennsylvania College for Women from 1935 to 1945. He came to PCW after serving as Dean of the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a master's degree in 1929 and his doctorate in 1933. He received his undergraduate degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). He was an archeologist with a known interest in photography as well. After leaving PCW, he became the President of Bucknell University. He was also the first man to receive an honorary degree from PCW- a Doctor of Laws in 1946.
