Description
In this photograph Johana Harris works with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony including Mihail Stolarevsky at her left. Johana and her husband Roy came to Chatham together thanks to a grant from the A.W. Mellon Education and Charitable Trust-- Roy as a resident composer and Johana as a pianist, teacher, and recording artist. In a 1951 Pittsburgh Press article the couple was called "Mr. and Mrs. American Music." Roy has a doctorate from Rutgers University and is known for his "Piano Sonata." Johana was the youngest student ever admitted to Julliard in 1927. She graduated at 16 years old and taught there for three years. Mr. and Mrs. Harris also created a program for educational television called "Master Keys," which aired on WQED.
