  • The Pittsburgh Brewing Company was originally founded by Edward Frauenheim as the Iron City Brewing Company in 1861. The headquarters for this company moved to Liberty Avenue and 34th Street, Pittsburgh Brewing Company’s present location, in 1866. On February 3, 1899, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company was officially formed from a merger between 21 Pennsylvania breweries, making it the third largest brewing company in the United States at the time. During the prohibition era of the 1920s and early 1930s, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company manufactured soft drinks, ice cream, and a product known as “near beer.” As breweries went out of fashion in the mid to late twentieth century, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company became one of forty breweries left in the United States. In 1995 the Pittsburgh Brewing Company was purchased by the Keystone Brewing Company for the sum of $29.4 million.
