Barges loaded with coal and the towboats (left to right) “Sailor,” “Warren Elsey” and “Aliquippa.” Under normal operating conditions at the Jones & Laughlin steel works and coke ovens, approximately 20,000 tons of coal were consumed each working day which, required a fleet of a dozen towboats and several hundred 1,000-ton steel barges that transported coal on the Monongahela River from the Vesta Coal Company mines to the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation’s Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works.
