Description
Looking south toward the North Side and downtown Pittsburgh are Buildings 13, 15, 16, and 17, of the Allegheny Dwellings. In January 1942 construction began on Allegheny Dwellings, a public housing project of the Pittsburgh Housing Authority located in the City’s North Side neighborhood. By this time the United States had entered World War II and Pittsburgh, which was experiencing a large influx of war workers, needed housing. Allegheny Dwellings, therefore, was used as temporary housing quarters for defense workers. Allegheny Dwellings was completed in February 1943.
