Description
The Washington Crossing Bridge, or 40th Street Bridge, at Fortieth Street spanning the Allegheny River commemorates the first President’s crossing in November 1753. Major George Washington nearly drowned when he attempted to cross the Allegheny River near this location. The bridge was opened on the 171st anniversary of the event, December 29, 1924. The bridge, designed by architects Benno Janssen and Janssen & Cocken, was built by the County of Allegheny in 1924 at a cost of $2,344,904. The total length (including the longest elevated ramp) is 2, 366 feet and it has a 72-foot clearance above the river. The balustrade, which runs the length of the bridge, includes metal reliefs of the Great Seal of each of the 13 original States plus the County of Allegheny. Each measures approximately two feet wide by three feet high.
