Description
Martin Luther King, Jr., Elementary School, located at 50 Montgomery place in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood, opened in September 1973. The building, designed by Pittsburgh architects Liff, Justh and Chetlin, cost approximately $4.7 million to complete, and could accommodate about 1100 students. The school was designed with an open plan that included six connected modified hexagons with each containing seven classrooms. Angles formed by walls delineated space without enclosing it. The structure maintains a low profile compatible with the surroundings, but incorporates three levels, each of which delivers the benefits of a one-story facility. In 1973 the school was one of three Pittsburgh Public Schools that contained a fully equipped color television studio capable of transmitting closed circuit television throughout the school. The large structure in the background is Allegheny General Hospital.
