Description
The Mesta Machine Company produced steam hydraulic shears (pictured here) in sizes up to 3600 tons. These shears were generally used to cut very large sections of steel, particularly, heavy slabs and blooms. The energy required for these shears was in direct proportion to the thickness of the metal to be cut. A single lever with an automatic cut-off operated the shears and eliminated shock. These impressive machines were often positioned near furnaces where the heat from boilers provided steam to power them.
