Description
Taylor Allderdice High School is located at the corner of Shady Avenue and Forward Street in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh. One of Pittsburgh’s largest urban high schools, the school had an enrollment of approximately 1,700 in 2003. The building pictured was erected in 1926 and was named for Taylor Allderdice, who began as a mill worker in Pittsburgh. He left the mill to attend college after which he joined the National Tube Company, eventually becoming President of the firm from 1926 to 1928. When the Pittsburgh School Code of 1911 became official, he was appointed one of the charter members of the school board.
