Description
Milroy School, located at 3020 Viola Street in the old North End School District of Allegheny City, was built in 1874 and referred to as a “little red school house.” Approximately one-quarter of its initial student body of 100 students consisted of Germans, Austrians, and Italians which reflected the make up of the North Side neighborhood at the time. Milroy School was closed in 1938. In 1946, it was sold for $3,000 and converted into a community center called Milroy House where Perry High school students gathered for dances and other activities. Since 1986, Milroy House has been the home for a government-sponsored program for pre-school children called “Head Start” that emphasizes parental involvement and child development.
