Description
Allied Chemical (today Honeywell since acquiring the company in 1999) Newell, Pa. Plant truck at the Pittsburgh Water Department Treatment Plant. The treatment plant was built in 1907. Prior to the construction of the water treatment plant, Pittsburgh had the highest rate of typhoid fever cases in the nation. In 1923, the treatment plant had the distinction of being the largest sand filtration plant in the world. Today it is operated by the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA). According to the PWSA website, the municipal authority was created in 1984 to oversee renovation of the city's water system. In 1994 the Pittsburgh Water Department was absorbed into the PWSA and in 1999 the PWSA took responsibility for Pittsburgh's sewer system as well.
