Description
Land Indenture between Edward Hand and Francis Howard, both members of the 18th 'Royal Irish' Regiment of Foot. The document outlines the sale by Hand to Howard of 1630 acres of land near Fort Pitt along the south bank of Monongahela River to its confluence with the Ohio River. According to the document, Hand had purchased these lands the previous year from George Croghan. Croghan had acquired the land from the Six Nations of the Iroquois following the Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1768. The signing of the document was witnessed by two officers of the 18th Foot, Lieutenant Robert Hamilton and Captain Charles Edmonstone, the latter then serving as commanding officer at Fort Pitt.
