While the company maintained its general offices in Pittsburgh, its Canonsburg Works was home to the company's plant and purchase office. The Fort Pitt Bridge Records contain contract files maintained by the Canonsburg Works for its World War II-era projects, most of which were completed in support of the war effort with Defense Plant Corporation oversight. A small number of files also pertain to the 1928 construction of the 31st Street Bridge and Keystone Athletic Club in Pittsburgh. The contract files include project bids, vendor and client correspondence, shipping notifications, receipts and shop drawings. Language The material in this collection is in English. The Fort Pitt Bridge Works (FPBW) was founded in May of 1896 through the merger of the Pittsburgh Architectural Iron Works and Straub and Blickle, the Pittsburgh-based contracting and engineering firm of Thomas A. Straub and H.R. Blickle. After opening its general offices at 421 Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh, the company relocated several times before establishing its headquarters in the Keystone Building. The company inherited its center of production, formerly situated along what is now I-79 in Canonsburg Borough, from the Pittsburgh Architectural Iron Works. For over sixty years the Canonsburg Works numbered among the largest contributors to the Washington County economy, employing approximately 650 residents and spanning over 25 acres by the end of World War II.
FPBW began as a fabricator of steel parts used in bridges and other structures for heavy industry and public utilities, including much of Pennsylvania's highway infrastructure. Some of the company's early projects include the Monongahela Bridge, the Sewickley Bridge (originally named the Ohio River Bridge), the first Bloomfield Bridge and Syria Mosque. FPBW expanded its operations during World War I, producing parts for prefabricated cargo ships and airplane hangars for France and the United States. Despite the cancellation of government contracts after the war's conclusion, the company continued to contribute steel parts to many notable local and national projects, including the Sesquicentennial International Exposition and the Jefferson Memorial. The McKees Rocks Bridge, Smithfield Street Bridge, Point Bridge II, Federal Building and many other significant structures in the Pittsburgh area also contain steel fabricated by FPBW. In 1930, FPBW expanded further, acquiring the Massillon Bridge and Structural Company of Massillon, Ohio.
The company's federal contracts recommenced as the United States' entered World War II. On August 22, 1940, Congress chartered the Defense Plant Corporation (DPC) to provide financial assistance and oversight for the construction and operation of plants which manufactured goods essential to the war effort, such as aircraft engines, rubber, aluminum, and steel. The Fort Pitt Bridge Works held many such contracts with the DPC during World War II, ultimately fabricating and erecting thousands of structural steel parts for aviation, chemical, steel, public utility and ordnance plants, as well as structures for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and other government agencies. DPC-funded projects likewise nurtured the rapid expansion of the rust belt steel producers, manufacturers and builders with which FPBW contracted, including Jones & Laughlin Steel Company, Dravo Corporation, Republic Steel Corporation, Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, and A.M. Byers Company.
The company maintained its production rate into the 1950s, continuing work on state roadway and plant construction projects. Along with its subsidiaries, the Steel Processing Company and Electric Welding Company, FPBW saw a decline in productivity by 1960 as production peaked and ready steel led to increased competition with other fabricators. In 1963, FPBW was acquired by Spang & Company, a Butler County-based national tool manufacturer seeking to diversify into structural fabrication. Fort Pitt Bridge Works was sold again in 1986 to Colonial Steel, which maintained reduced facilities at the Canonsburg site until 2006.
Scope and Content Notes The Fort Pitt Bridge Works Records contain contract files pertaining to the company's World War II-era projects and its involvement in the 1928 construction of the 31st Street Bridge and Keystone Athletic Club in Pittsburgh. The bulk of the company's wartime contracts were held through or in connection with the Defense Plant Corporation. The DPC often acted through a corporate agent (usually a private steel corporation or construction company) with whom FPBW would contract directly. The contract files were created and maintained at FPBW's Canonsburg Works, the site of the company's purchase office and plant. The files, which typically contain contract cover sheets outlining the project, project bids, shipping notifications, shop drawings, vendor and client correspondence, receipts and other missives, communicate the rapid pace of production maintained by FPBW during the war and its involvement in a wide range of projects, including Pittsburgh bridges, state highways, barracks and other structures for the armed forces, defense housing developments, and the expansion of local steel and manufacturing plants.
The Fort Pitt Bridge Works Records are housed in accordance with the company's original filing system, which follows a series of contract numbers. As the contract numbers were issued consecutively at the time of each contract's creation, the collection follows a roughly chronological order. The contract numbers are included within each folder title along with names of the client, associated principal contractor(s), and the project name and location.
