The Brodhead family papers (1870-1903) contain event programs, facsimiles of historical reviews of Col. Daniel Brodhead, medicinal notebooks, and a business ledger. The Brodhead family of Kittanning attended Kittanning Public School and Kittanning High School. There are program sheets from the 1887 dedication of a new school building, as well as commencement and musical event programs. The Colonel Daniel Brodhead military expedition up the Allegheny River in 1779 is documented in two typed family histories as well as several secondary historical accounts. Three note books and a ledger contain information from the Brodhead family pharmacy and wholesale drug business in Kittanning. E.A. Brodhead 1857 journal of elixirs and medical ingredients is included, as well as a 1884 German to English medical dictionary, and a daily business ledger documenting the years 1860-1862 and 1892-1894.., Brodhead family papers, 1857-1903, MSS 0715, Rauh Jewish Archives, Library and Archives, Senator John Heinz History Center, Cataloging of this collection was funded by a Basic Processing grant from NHPRC., Edward Benz Gift 1996 1996.0138, The Brodhead family owned and operated E.A. Brodhead and Sons pharmacy and whole sale drug store in Kittanning, Pa., during the late ninetieth and early twentieth centuries. In the 1912 national druggist directory Wm. F. Brodhead is named under the Brodhead listing. The Brodhead family in Western Pennsylvania is primarily associated with Colonel Daniel Brodhead (1736-1809). In April of 1779, General George Washington appointed him commander of Fort Pitt and later that year ordered Col. Brodhead to lead a strike up the Allegheny River against Native American forces allied with the British. The 30 day expedition succeeded in disrupting the Seneca ability to wage war in the region. The Brodhead family name has also been honored on a stained-glass window in the Heinz Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh., Processed MSS 0715 02/12 A.
