Historical Sketch

Corinne Azen Krause (CK) is a historian who has made Pittsburgh, the women of Pittsburgh, and the Jewish communities of the city the focus of her research. She earned a B. A. with Honors in economics from the University of Michigan, an M. A. in history from Carnegie-Mellon University, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pittsburgh. She has taught history at Taylor Allderdice and Schenley High Schools, Carnegie-Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carlow and Chatham Colleges.

Dr. Krause was a research associate in the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh; she taught oral history at the University Graduate School of Library and Information Science; and was a Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.

An oral history project of three generations of American women of Italian, Jewish, and Slavic descent resulted in a nationally distributed report and several scholarly articles in 1978. A book entitled Grandmothers, Mothers, and Daughters (1991) contains oral histories of eighteen of the women interviewed in the three-generation study (see MSS# 348). In 1982, Dr. Krause produced Roots and Branches, an interpretive exhibition of the history of the Jewish communities of Pittsburgh.

Other publications include Isaac W. Frank: Engineer and Civic Leader (1980); Los Judios en Mexico (1987), a social history of Jews in independent Mexico; Refractories: the Hidden Industry (1987); as well as articles and book reviews.

Dr. Krause is a founding member of Jewish Residential Services, an agency organized to provide housing with professional support services to young adults with serious and persistent mental illness. She was also a founder of the Pittsburgh Ethnic Coalition. She is a member of the advisory committee of the Rauh Jewish Archives of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, a former member of the board of the Historical Society, and a life member of the board of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Jewish Committee.

Scope and Content Notes

The Corinne Krause Papers are housed in nine archival boxes and are arranged in three series. Reflecting the fact that the materials in this collection are the working papers of Dr. Krause's professional and organizational activities, series have been designated for Organization Membership Files, Project Files, and Research Files. Represented among the papers are original certificates, handwritten research notes, oral history transcripts, presentation and exhibit drafts, programs, various materials related to organizational membership, and newspaper clippings. However, many documents are photocopies of pages and chapters from books, periodicals, correspondences, and other miscellaneous materials relating to CK's research.

Embedded within the larger collection are the scrapbooks of Miriam Schonfield, The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) Pittsburgh Section, the Irene Kaufman Center of Squirrel Hill, and the records of the Podolier Beneficial Organization. Miriam Schonfield's scrapbooks consist of clippings related to her work as an educator and her involvement in Jewish organizations. The loose contents were removed from the scrapbook and are arranged in box 8, folder 53 in the "People" series. Also included are news clippings related to theater in Pittsburgh as well as many playbills. The Podolier papers include contractual documents supporting the creation and development of the society; the papers are arranged in the "Organizations" series.

Transcripts for the oral histories created for the Roots and Branches exhibit as well as audiocassette tapes of interviews for her book Refractories: the Hidden Industry are included in the collection (tapes are closed pending creation of use copies). Records documenting the development of the Roots and Branches exhibit include exhibit scripts and floor plans.

Materials collected regarding various institutions, organizations, people, synagogues, and the history of Jewish life in Pittsburgh may provide connections and information otherwise difficult to research. Researchers should scan the "Container List" for papers relating to their subject searches.

2003.0118 accession:

These papers are housed in five archival boxes and arranged in four series. Series are designated for materials related CK's work with the Jewish Residential Services; various aspects of her professional work; her research and her writings.

The Jewish Residential Services series contains financial and fund-raising records, personal narratives, program descriptions and miscellaneous board materials.

The Professional series includes correspondence, biographical material of CK, materials related to her exhibit Roots and Branches, and to the Western Pennsylvania Jewish Archives (now the Rauh Jewish Archives.)

The Research series includes copies of articles collected by CK as well as her notes. The subjects are primarily biographies, organizations, education, and women, although there are materials on other subjects as well.

The Writings series includes the work of CK. Most are based on the oral histories she did for Grandmothers, Mothers, and Daughters: An Oral History of Ethnicity, Mental Health, and Continuity of Three Generations of Jewish, Italian, and Slavic-American Women. Other writings include biographies of Bertha Floersheim Rauh, Miriam Schonfield, as well as on Rodef Shalom women, activists, and Jewish immigrant women in Pittsburgh.
