History

Beth Israel Center was a Jewish congregation located in Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1958 by a small group of local businessmen, engineers, scientists, and other professionals, many of whom had moved to the South Hills of Pittsburgh to work at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pa. The congregation was incorporated in 1959 and eventually affiliated with the Conservative movement. The by-laws of the congregation placed an equal emphasis on the cultural, social, synagogue, and academic roles of the Center. The congregation closed in 2017.

Early congregational meetings, worship services and religious school classes were held at the Pleasant Hills Library, the McClellan School and a local Presbyterian church in the area. Beth Israel Center dedicated a new synagogue and community center on Gill Hall Road in Pleasant Hills in 1963. Construction was funded through compulsory building fund contributions by members. However, use of the building was permitted by all members of the local Jewish community. The Beth Israel Center Sisterhood raised funds for the interior, including construction of the kitchen and floors, and the installation of ritual furnishings. A ceremonial mortgage burning occurred in 1980. An associated building on the property, known as "The Manse," served as a parsonage for rabbinic leaders.

Over its six decades, Beth Israel Center had both full-time and part-time rabbinic leadership and a long stretch of lay leadership. The congregation had three full-time rabbis in its early years: Rabbi Robert Kaufman (1961 to 1966), Rabbi Meir Leifer (1966 to 1972), and Rabbi Abraham Garmaize (1972 to 1974). Rabbi Phillip Sigal served the congregation in a part time capacity from 1977 to 1979. Between 1979 and 2003, lay members of the congregation led services and classes. Rabbi Amy Greenbaum served the congregation on a part-time basis from early 2003 until its closing in 2017. Mordechai Haalman was a cantor and teacher at the congregation during its early years. His son Dr. Perry Haalman was its education director for many years.
