Charlie McCollester worked at the Union Switch and Signal and became involved in the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 610 where he served as Chief Steward. He helped organize the Tri-State Conference on the Impact of Steel and the Steel Valley Authority (SVA) in an effort to save the steel industry the Pittsburgh region. This collection contains meeting minutes, articles and publications of Tri-State and SVA documenting their efforts to save the steel industry. There are also materials included that pertain to McCollester's work as Chief Steward of UE Local 610. Materials also include reports and research on MAGLEV, automation and other topics.

The files in this collection show the work Charles McCollester has done pertaining to the Pittsburgh area steel industry, as well as the field of labor. There are records of his time as a machinist at Union Switch and Signal and Cheif Steward of United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 610 that span from 1978 to 1986, including news articles and reports of events. This collection also includes records from the Tri-State Conference on the Impact of Steel and the Stell Valley Authority (SVA), such as meeting minutes and newspaper articles on the work of these two organizations in response to the deindustrialization of the region. There are also research and reports on modern technologies that include MAGLEV and advances in automation.
Biography/History
Charles McCollester was born on June 24, 1943, and he has worked as a social activist most of his life. He earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Leuvain in Belgium and he has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Northern Africa before settling in Pittsburgh where married his wife, Linda. McCollester worked a variety of jobs before becoming a machinist at Union Switch and Signal in 1978. There he became heavily involved in United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 610 and campaigned to become the Chief Steward of the local. He was involved in the Westinghouse Airbrake Company (WABCO) strike that spanned from November 1981 until May 1982, which left many people out of work during that time, himself included. McCollester also became involved in the creation of the Tri-State Conference on the Impact of Steel and the Steel Valley Authority (SVA), which worked to save the steel industry in the Pittsburgh area as mills began to shut down.
McCollester also taught at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) where he was the director of the Pennsylvania Center for the Study of Labor Relations. He has remained a labor activist and is currently the president of the Battle of Homestead Foundation in Pittsburgh.

This series contains information on Tr-State's efforts to keep the steel industry alive in the Pittsburgh region. Included are papers on regional reindustrialization and also information on conferences hosted by the organization. It also includes documents regarding the LTV Corporation and the Tri-State committees to save the jobs of those who worked there after the company filed for bankruptcy; the Industrial Capital fund; and records concerning the creation of the Metals Retention Study, including advisory board meeting materials.

Members of Pittsburgh area communities created the Steel Valley Authority (SVA) in an effort to stop steel mill closings and the loss of jobs in the region. The founding meeting was in 1986, and the SVA still active today. This series includes meeting minutes and committee and staff reports. It also documents the activities and the publications of the SVA. There are also records on the effort to save South Side Electrics, including reports and information on the committees that were created to help save the electric furnace and newspaper clippings.
Documents on City Pride Bakery, previously the Braun Bakery, are also present. City Pride was a worker-operated company created in 1989 after Braun Bakery was closed. Included is information on the City Pride business plan, operation and eventual closure in 1994.

It documents the time before, during, and after the WABCO strike of 1981 to 1982,as well as the union's 1985 contract negotiations. McCollester's activities as the chief steward are higlighted, including steward elections, the eventual closing of the Switch and Signal, and the efforts to save the plant through the Save the Switch and Signal Coalition.
