Abstract
This collection contains aerial images of Downtown, the South Side, Mount Washington, the North Side, the Strip District, the Hill District, the Bluff, the Point, and Oakland taken between ca. 1923 and 1937. Many show landmarks that are now gone, such as the Brady Street Bridge, the Manchester Bridge, Point Bridge, the Jones and Laughlin Steel Mill, and Forbes Field. Digital reproductions of the collection are available online.

Scope and Content Notes

This collection contains aerial images of Downtown, the South Side, Mount Washington, the North Side, the Strip District, the Hill District, the Bluff, the Point, and Oakland taken between ca. 1923 and 1937. Many show landmarks that are now gone, such as the Brady Street Bridge, the Manchester Bridge, Point Bridge, the Jones and Laughlin Steel Mill, and Forbes Field. They also show sites of present day landmarks such as the Koppers Building, the Gulf Building, Pitt Stadium, and the Cathedral of Learning before and during their construction. Other negatives show areas around Pittsburgh including the Beyer Family Estate, radio station WAEG, Bettis Airfield, Rogers Airfield, and Allegheny County Municipal Airport, as well as many manufacturing plants. Two images are of New Kensington, Pa., and twenty show the damages of the Ohio River Flood of 1937.

Gift of Ted Newbold, President of the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, 1988.

Custodial History

This small group of aerial views were included within another collection held by the Philadelphia Maritime Museum. The museum gave the photographs relating to Pittsburgh to the University Library System in 1988.
