History

The Friendship Club of Pittsburgh is a German-Jewish immigrant organization founded in 1936 to aid German-Jewish refugees. The goal of the Friendship Club was "to help provide for persons of the Jewish faith coming to the United States and settling in Pittsburgh or its surroundings, opportunities of a social, educational, and spiritual nature; to help them become adjusted to their new surroundings; to foster civic spirit; to encourage them to become citizens as soon as possible; to provide a meeting place for the accomplishment of these purposes; and to co-operate with charitable fundraising campaigns in the city." The first headquarters of the Friendship Club was at 5824 Forbes Ave. in Oakland.

Scope and Content Notes

The Friendship Club Records span the years 1935-1976 with the bulk of the material being within the years 1950-1965. The records of the Friendship Club include: a charter, constitution and by-laws, board meetings, membership lists, minutes, reports, elections, case files, correspondence, publications, clippings, speeches, photographs, questionnaires, social calenders, memorials, financial records, and miscellany. There are thirteen series within the collection. The collection covers Friendship Club administrative notes, to include meeting minutes, election records, reports, case files, correspondence, and financial records. Also included are the speeches and correspondence of Alfred Markus, charter member and later president of the Friendship Club. The Club also collected magazines and journals dedicated to Jewish heritage and that is contained in the final series. Also in the last series is the Friendship Club's own publication known as the Friendship Club Gossip from 1953-1957 and as the Friendship Club Recorder from 1958-1962.
