Description
Etta (also known as Ettie) Purviance was an instructor in mathematics at Pennsylvania Female College from 1873-1876. Etta and her husband, James H. Park, later lived near the college, at the corner of Fifth Avenue and South Negley Avenue. She is listed in Adelaide Mellier Nevin's 1888 book of society sketches, The Social Mirror, as follows: "Mrs. James Park, Jr., as Miss Ettie Purviance, was quite a belle in Allegheny society. The Parks have recently built a splendid home, which will doubtless be the scene of much elegant hospitality." A later society directory (1912) lists the Parks winter residence as Dresden, Germany, which is where this portrait was likely taken. Etta Purviance Park died in 1917.
