Description
Reverend S.M. Henderson was an active member of the Pittsburgh Presbytery in the late 1800s. A graduate of the Western Theological Seminary, Henderson was the first pastor of the Wilkinsburg Presbyterian Church in 1867. In 1875, Reverend James Black left the Pennsylvania Female College and Henderson began teaching the advanced courses in Latin and Greek in his place. At that time, a student at the Pennsylvania Female College was required to study a foreign language for three years to graduate. Henderson taught Greek and Latin for a few years before leaving to accept a teaching position at Biddle University, now Johnson C. Smith University, in Charlotte, N.C. He died in 1879 when he was 39 years old.
