Description
Helen Elizabeth Pelletreau was the third President of the Pennsylvania Female College and the first woman to hold the office. Pelletreau was born in South Hampton, NY on June 1, 1835. She came to the PFC in 1870 and served as a preceptress. In 1871 she began teaching Political Science and English and also became Dean. In 1878, she became the Acting President and was elected President in 1882. She served as President until her retirement in 1894. As President, she worked to secure the College financially by bringing it out of debt. She was also able to increase the number of students. When she left Pittsburgh in 1894, a scholarship committee was formed in her honor. She retired in Brooklyn, NY where she continued to give lectures on Parliamentary Law. She died on August 4, 1915 and is buried in Homewood Cemetery.
