Description
The mansion of George A. Berry along with ten and one half acres of ground on Murray Hill above Fifth Avenue became the first building to house the Pennsylvania Female College. On July 5, 1870 the Board of Trustees authorized the purchase of the three story red brick American Gothic style residence, reputed to be the largest private home in Allegheny County, for $80,000. With many renovations and additions the mansion was in continuous use until the last portions were demolished in 1953. It became known as Berry Hall in 1888 when Dilworth Hall I was constructed.
