Description
In this photograph, College President Cora Helen Coolidge breaks ground for a building addition to Woodland Hall. President of the College from 1922 to 1933, her Presidency is known for its active building program which included an addition to Woodland Hall (1929), the building of the Buhl Hall of Sciences (1931), and the James Laughlin Memorial Library (1932). The Student Government Association was also begun during her Presidency. Ms. Coolidge was born in Westminster, MA and graduated from the Cushing Academy (Ashburnham, MA) in 1887. She also graduated from Smith College (Northampton, MA) in 1892. From 1906 to 1917 she served as Dean of the Pennsylvania College for Women. During her time as Dean, she introduced and encouraged the founding of a club for all college women in Pittsburgh. From her efforts, the Pittsburgh College Club was organized in 1909. In 1917 she accepted an appointment as the National Chairman of the Bureau of Occupation (which coordinated job placement for women during World War I) and remained there until the College asked her to return as President in 1922. In 1932 and 1933 her health continued to decline and Mary Helen Marks gradually took over Presidential responsibilities.
