Description
Wing-tsit Chan was one of the world's leading scholars of Chinese philosophy and religion. He was the Anna R. D. Gillespie Professor of Philosophy at Chatham from 1966-1982. Born in rural China in 1901, Chan was among the first Chinese students to seek a modern Western education, graduating from Lingnan University, a Christian college near Canton. He received his doctorate from Harvard in 1929 and returned to China to become academic dean at Lingnan. He later returned to the United States and taught at a number of institutions, including Columbia, Dartmouth, and the University of Hawaii. He died in Pittsburgh in 1994, at the age of 92.
