Description
Here Drama professor Patricia Montley is posed with a group of her drama students who include Ellen Moore ('87), Helen Meade, and Janet Fanale (Theater '86). Before coming to Chatham, Montley received a master's of Arts degree at both the University of Notre Dame and the Catholic University of America. She received her PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Minnesota. A former nun, about half of Montley's plays have religious themes, and in her own words most of her work is "feminist without apology." While in Pittsburgh, "Sister Pat" hosted a program on WQED television called "Irish Radio Hour." Her plays include "Rachel Carson Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," which was first published in 1995. Her books include In Nature's Honor which was published in 2005. After 17 years in Pittsburgh, Dr. Montley moved back to Baltimore in 2000 to be closer to her family. In her farewell to the college community she wrote, "It is with a heavy heart that I leave Chatham- where I have enjoyed the support, collaboration, and friendship of administrators, faculty, staff, and students, where I have been free to be myself, where I have been encouraged to take creative risks on stage and in the classroom, where my failures have been forgiven, my successes praised, my ranting tolerated, and my hard work appreciated."
