Description
The first gym classes at the Pennsylvania Female College were held in a third floor addition to Berry Hall. In 1892, under the direction of Helen Pelletreau, a new building was constructed on campus which was dedicated to physical activity for students. According to the College catalog from 1892 the gymnasium requirements included dumbbells, running, and light gymnastics. By 1948 a new building for physical education was needed and the College chose to build a gym on the newly acquired McCargo property. They called the new gym "Gymnasium II." Physical Education classes offered in 1948 included field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, archery, badminton, bowling, dance, and swimming. In 2004, the College hired Rothschild and Doyno Architects to convert Gymnasium II into a Art and Design Center. The architects chose to retain certain elements of the old gym, including the College logo in the center of the wood floor. The Art and Design Center has classrooms and studios for landscape and interior architecture, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture.
