Description
The Pittsburgh Brewing Company was originally founded by Edward Frauenheim as the Iron City Brewing Company in 1861. The headquarters for this company moved to Liberty Avenue and 34th Street, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company’s present location, in 1866. On February 3, 1899, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company was officially formed from a merger between 21 Pennsylvania breweries, making it the third largest brewing company in the United States at the time. During the prohibition era of the 1920s and early 1930s, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company manufactured soft drinks, ice cream, and a product known as “near beer.”
