Description
The H.J. Heinz Company courtyard at its main plant in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. In the foreground is the Time Office, a twenty-five feet square, one-story high structure built with terra cotta Pompeian brick. The structure had three entrances, one used by the male employees, one used by the female employees, and the general public and visitors used the center passage. In the left center is the “House Where We Began,” built in 1854 by John Henry Heinz on Main Street in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, it was the family’s first home. In 1904 this house was floated five miles down the Allegheny River and placed in the courtyard. In 1952 the house was dismantled and rebuilt in Greenfield Village, Michigan. A 100,000-gallon water tank used for fire suppression was located underneath the courtyard. In the right foreground is a vinegar tank car. The H.J. Heinz Company was the first company to ship vinegar and pickles in tank cars. In 1894 the company designed a 9,950-gallon tank car containing four-inch thick cypress staves (narrow strips forming part of the sides of the outside of the tank car).
