Description
During Memorial Day celebrations held in the Pittsburgh area, numerous parades were planned to pay homage to the veterans of all American wars. The Spanish War Veterans (forbearer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization) along with the Grand Army of the Republic, the American Legion, and the Sons of Veterans of the Civil War held joint services at the Uniondale Cemetery No. 3 and the Troy Hill Cemetery. The Swift's Mission Brigade, the order of Independent Americans and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America also took part. They eventually paraded down Stockton Avenue and Federal Street. Other services were held in Wilkinsburg, Woodlawn, Saint Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in East Liberty and Allegheny Cemetery. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States was founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) to secure medical care and pensions for veterans. Currently the VFW, and its Auxiliaries, includes 2.6 million members in approximately 9,000 locations worldwide. Currently Post 68, also known as the General Mac Author Post, is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
