Description
Benjamin F. Jones, Jr., son of the founder of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, Benjamin Franklin Jones, was born in 1863. Unlike his father, who had only the equivalent of a high school education and went to Pittsburgh to seek his fortune when he was 18, B. J. Jones, Jr., was a graduate of Princeton University. Following his graduation in 1891, he joined two of his cousins who were active in the family’s steel-making company. It was he who directed the consolidation of the two firms, John & Laughlins, Ltd. and Laughlin & Company, and reorganized them into the corporation, Jones & Laughlin Steel Company. He became chairman of the board of directors when it was again reorganized in 1923. He died in 1928.
