  • Many buildings were cleared making way for the construction of Mellon Square Park in the acre between Smithfield Street, Oliver and Sixth Avenues, and William Penn Place in downtown Pittsburgh. The demolished buildings included a number of small shops and restaurants such as the Thrift Drug store, Thompson’s Restaurant, as well as larger buildings such as the People’s Natural Gas Co. Building and the old Davis Theater. Enough material was removed from the construction site to fill the equivalent of 540 boxcars and enough concrete was poured into the hole to pack 90 boxcars solid. The 1.37-acre, $7.9 million park opened in 1955.
