Description
This image features a block of 6th Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, which was razed to make way for the Mellon Square in 1953. Many buildings were cleared making way for the construction of Mellon Square Park in the acre between Smithfield Street, Oliver and Sixth Avenues, and William Penn Place. The demolished buildings included a number of small shops and restaurants such as the S.H. DeRoy (pictured here), Thompson’s Restaurant (on the left), as well as better known buildings such as the People’s Natural Gas Co. Building and the old Davis Theater. Enough material was removed from the construction site to fill the equivalent of 540 boxcars and enough concrete was poured into the hole to pack 90 boxcars solid. The 1.37-acre, $7.9 million park opened in 1955.
