Description
Looking north along the east side of Beaver Avenue from the extreme end of Beaver Avenue, west of Chateau Street in Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood. The $26 million Chateau Street West redevelopment project was initially proposed to Pittsburgh’s City Council by then Mayor Joseph M. Barr in April 1960. About 22 companies committed to buy, build, or expand their facilities in the 98-acre project area. Government agencies spent over $14 million in public funds to buy property, relocate people, rebuild streets, and make other improvements. Of the 22 companies that committed to this project, 12 of them were new to Chateau Street West, and a few others were new to the City of Pittsburgh. The Urban Redevelopment Authority acquired 48 of the 98 acres in the renewal project for clearance, and relocated 723 families and businesses to the area.
