  • An aerial view of the North Side with Allegheny Center pictured in the center. Allegheny Center, designed by architects Deeter & Ritchey, was a $65 million project of Alcoa Properties, Inc. The construction project razed about 518 buildings to make way for 2 professional buildings, 4 apartment complexes totaling 840 units, 50 townhouses, a shopping mall, and a 3-acre public square. The public square was the object of an international design competition sponsored by the Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority. The entire Allegheny Redevelopment Area encompasses approximately 79-acres on the North Side, about a half-mile from downtown Pittsburgh. The domed structure (center) is the Buhl Planetarium, opened on October 24, 1939, and the building directly to the right of the planetarium is the North Side Library and Music Hall, established by Andrew Carnegie in 1890.
