Description of the photograph reads, “New soaking pits used to bring silicon steel ingots up to slab rolling temperature at U. S. Steel’s Clairton Works are now in operation. These pits are important units in the new modernizing equipment plant installed for the production of silicon steel ingots and slabs. Silicon steel is used in the manufacture of power transformers and electrical equipment.”
