Description of the photograph reads, “PITTSBURGH, PA., May 9 – America’s first airtight chamber for vacuum casting of large forging ingots will go into operation soon at U. S. Steel’s Duquesne Works. Fabricated and designed at the Ambridge, Pa., plant of American Bridge, the chamber is 17 feet in diameter and 31 feet high including the base and top sections. Supported by heavy steel members the chamber will be permitted to move about when in operation. Here American Bridge workmen make test assembly of the chamber before shipment.”
