Description
The City of Pittsburgh began construction on St. Clair Village in November of 1951. The Housing Authority chose an area outside of Pittsburgh’s urban center and away from Pittsburgh’s then highly industrial peripheral areas, differentiating St. Clair Village from the other low-rent housing projects built during the same period. The acquisition of the site cost the Housing Authority $562,109.23, in addition, the Housing Authority paid out another $1,783,730.32 to improve the location. The site originally consisted of two hills separated by a ravine surrounded by steep slopes, making construction difficult. The Housing Authority moved 530,000 cubic yards of earth to convert the site into a community of 1089 town homes. Today, St. Clair Village is located at 930 Cresswell Street in Pittsburgh’s St. Clair neighborhood, and consists of several exterior courtyards that surround a community of townhouses. There is also a large multi-purpose center, recreation center, outdoor pool, basketball court, and playground providing educational and recreational activities year-round.
